Description:

This position requires working indoors at a computer station, standing indoors and outdoors for up to two hours at a time, and walking up to 2 miles on paved or uneven terrain. The intern will work independently, as part of a team, and with leads and mentors. This position requires the ability to lift up to 30 pounds above shoulder height and operate a full-size truck. A valid state-issued driver’s license is required.

Responsibilities:

This internship works within the Interpretation and Education Division at Zion National Park. The education staff is based out of the Zion Nature Center in Zion Canyon where ranger programs, hands-on activities, and interactive displays are offered in the summer. Intern will also support facility operations through weekly collection of recycling from visitor and administrative areas throughout the park and will collaborate with the Zion Visual Information office to develop communication plans for park staff and members of the public regarding waste reduction.

Working closely with their direct supervisor, the intern will be responsible for the development and implementation of education and interpretive materials, including digital-visual media posts, on-site displays, and public programs in support of the grant-sponsored Don’t Feed the Landfill program. In collaboration with the Sustainability branch of the Facility Management Division, the intern will build expertise in waste management practices and diversion efforts at Zion National Park. The intern will be responsible for presenting DFtL programs to park visitors and local community through formal and informal interpretive and Junior Ranger programming, including pop-up tables, patio talks, roving trails, and staffing the information desk at the Nature Center.

Qualifications:

  • The candidate should enjoy working closely with families and children.

  • Good customer service and interpersonal skills are highly desirable.

  • The candidate should maintain an interest in engaging in public programs and presentations with potentially large audiences of both adults and children and exhibit a willingness to engage with the public through regular social media posts.
